Applicants granted testing accommodations may be tested at the same location (if there is adequate and appropriate space available) or at a different site (usually in downtown St. Paul). Applicants will be advised of the site location approximately one month prior to the examination.

Filing deadlines

The Minnesota Board of Law Examiners has moved our application process online as of June 3, 2022. Click here to learn how to apply using the online bar application. Paper copies of the application will not be accepted.

The timely filing deadline is Monday, October 16, 2023.
The late filing deadline is Friday, December 1, 2023 ($200 late filing fee must be included if filing by this date unless you are a repeater. Repeaters do not need to pay the late filing fee and may file up to December 1, 2023).

Exam Timing

Specific timing will be posted to your portal no later than one week prior to the exam. Here is an example of the timing:

Tuesday morning doors open: 7:30 a.m.
Tuesday registration: 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. (Allow 20-30 minutes to complete registration)
Tuesday morning instructions: 8:40 a.m. (be in your seat)
Tuesday morning session: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (2 MPT questions)
Tuesday afternoon doors open: 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday afternoon instructions: 1:15 p.m. (be in your seat)
Tuesday afternoon session: 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (6 MEE questions)

Wednesday morning doors open: 7:30 a.m.
Wednesday registration: 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Wednesday morning instructions: 8:40 a.m. (be in your seat)
Wednesday morning session: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (100 MBE questions)
Wednesday afternoon doors open: 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday afternoon instructions: 1:15 p.m. (be in  your seat)
Wednesday afternoon session: 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (100 MBE questions)

Digital clocks are placed around the room for timekeeping. They are synchronized as close as possible with the official clock, which is located at the Exam Supervisor’s platform. Analog watches will be permitted; digital watches are not permitted due to exam security.

Parking

There is parking at the RiverCentre Parking Ramp and in the Kellogg Blvd Parking Ramp. There are many other parking ramps in downtown St. Paul.

Registration on Exam Days

You must sign-in with the Registrars on both Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday

  • Doors open at 7:30
  • Registration is from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
  • You must sign in with the registrars
  • Allow at least 20-30 minutes to complete registration
  • You must bring your ADMISSION TICKET printed from your Applicant Portal on the first day of the exam. You will not be admitted without your Admission Ticket.
  • You must bring your driver’s license or a government issued ID with your picture and signature
  • If you have special permission to bring in otherwise prohibited items, you must present a green admission card (see more info under “What to Bring”)
  • Examinee ID badges are issued at registration. You must wear it throughout the exam.
  • You will go through security screening both days. Please review the permitted items in advance and leave all other items at the unsecured area, in your car, or at home.

Wednesday

  • Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
  • Registration is from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
  • You must sign in with the registrars
  • Allow at least 20-30 minutes to complete registration
  • You must bring your examinee ID badge on the second day of the exam for registration, and wear it throughout the exam
  • You must bring your driver’s license or a government issued ID with your picture and signature
  • You do NOT need to bring your Admission Ticket on Wednesday
  • If you have special permission to bring in otherwise prohibited items, you must present a green admission card (see more info under “What to Bring”)

What to Bring

Anyone who has requested and received special permission to bring an otherwise prohibited item into the exam room (such as pillows, lumbar rolls, wrist rest, ergonomic chairs, etc.) must present the green permission card to the security person at the secure testing area entrance and ask for assistance.

You may leave prohibited personal items in a designated UNSECURE area outside of the exam room. Leave all valuables at home. The Board of Law Examiners and RiverCentre authorities assume no responsibility for lost or stolen personal items.

Make sure to bring:

  • Driver’s license or government issued ID with your picture and signature (Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • Admission Ticket (Tuesday)
  • Examinee ID Badge provided at the bar exam (Wednesday)

Laptop

Review the laptop registration and information page to use a laptop. If you are registered to use your laptop to take the exam, review the instructions you will receive via email and on your applicant portal with your admission ticket prior to the exam.

Uploading Exam Answers

Additional details will be posted prior to the exam.

Food and Beverage

  • No food or beverage is allowed in the secure testing area or exam room with the exception of your see-through, reusable water bottle. Only water is allowed inside of the water bottle.
  • Your see-through, reusable water bottle may be refilled at the water fountain and/or water bottle filling station near the restrooms inside of the secure area.
  • Your water bottle must be placed on the floor to avoid potential spills on electronics. Sport tops, straws, or similar spill-proof tops are preferred.
  • A water station and disposable cups will also be available inside of the exam room.
  • If you choose to bring your own lunch, you may leave it at the unsecured coat check area. You may leave the facility for lunch.
  • There is one gender neutral restroom in the secure area. There is also a family restroom in Kellogg Lobby.

Additional Information

  • Laptop and handwriting examinees are seated in the same room.
  • No scratch paper is allowed. You may write in your test booklets, but may not tear any pages from the booklets or tear the booklets apart in any way.
  • No exam books or paper may be removed from the exam room.
  • Exam tables at RiverCentre measure 8’ x 18”. There will be two examinees per table.
  • If the exam is interrupted for any reason, remain seated and wait for instructions from the Exam Supervisor.
  • Once admitted, you may not leave the secure testing area or exam room unless you are escorted by a proctor or staff. If you leave unescorted, you will not be permitted to re-enter.
  • You may not talk once instructions begin.
  • If you need assistance at any time for any reason, raise your hand and a proctor will assist you.
  • If you finish the test session early, bring your exam materials to the head proctor and exit the exam room.
  • An announcement will be made when there are only 15 minutes remaining in the test session.
  • You may not leave the room during the last 15 minutes of the test session.
  • You must stop the test immediately when time is called.
  • You must remain seated until the exams have been collected and counted.
  • RiverCentre is a smoke-free facility.
  • As a courtesy to others, please avoid wearing perfume or cologne.
